Land of the Free?

“So this is how the world ends.  Not with a bang but a whimper.”  T S Eliot, The Hollow Men

When I was growing up during the Cold War, sometimes I would imagine what it would be like if America was overthrown and we lost our freedom.  I envisioned invading armies, a devastated populace, and dictates from on high declaring that America was no longer free and that we would be forced at gunpoint to comply with radical changes concerning almost every aspect of our lives.  Little did I know that all it would take was a gradual, continuous drip of liberal erosion to get us to almost the same place.

Our children have been taught to accept government intrusion into their lives literally the day they’re brought home from the hospital.  Car seats, bike helmets, Common-Core data mining, school lunch programs, and government-only student loan programs are just some of the things kids today have grown up with that we didn’t; they have never known any other way.  They have learned to accept these things in the name of safety, convenience or compassion.  Only a “hater” could argue with that.  Yet these children are still told and believe they’re free.  Our childhood version of freedom is as antiquated to them as victrolas and butter churns.

Sure, we still have our First Amendment rights.  Unless you don’t want to pay for abortions under Obamacare due to religious beliefs, or those beliefs get you labeled a bigot and your business is forced to close because you won’t photograph a gay wedding.

And our Second Amendment is still whole.  Unless you want to purchase ammunition that is unavailable due to government agency hoarding or a presidential executive order banning it altogether.

The Fourth Amendment is rock solid.  Unless you mind the NSA saving every email, text and phone call we make.  That can’t be at all what our founding fathers called “unlawful search and seizure”.  Get that tin foil hat off your head!

Well, we still have our distinctly American culture that values freedom, the rule of law and hard work, don’t we?  It is also being eroded, but seemingly not fast enough for the Obama administration.  To hasten our culture’s demise, they have thrown open our southern border to any and all comers, especially minor children.  This is noteworthy because even though American children are steadily becoming acclimated to government control in their lives, these illegal immigrant kids are entirely helpless.  They need government aid for absolutely everything:  food, housing, Medicaid, ESL education.  It is likely they will rely on the United States government for everything they need for the rest of their lives.  These kids are made-to-order leftists with no sense of freedom’s true meaning whatsoever.  The rule of law isn’t important, because they already broke the law in coming here.  Hard work?  Why, when everything you need is supplied?  If you oppose this, (you know the drill) you’re a heartless, racist…

In a way, you have to hand it to them.  Leftists have been comprehensive at attacking freedom from every angle:  cultural, economic, political, educational, legal, even energy and foreign policy have been bastardized.  Meanwhile the GOP has rendered itself impotent either out of fear or tacit agreement.

As leftists often do, they change the meaning of words they have problems with.  They have altered the word “marriage” to their liking.  Today “Freedom” no longer means what it did.  America’s founding fathers’ definition of freedom meant a freedom from a tyrannical, oppressive government, and life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  Too many currently think “freedom” means free stuff, freedom from judgement, and if it feels good, do it.

I love the end of our national anthem, “the land of the free, and the home of the brave”.  But lately when I hear it, I picture Obama and his many minions giving each other a “wink-wink, nudge-nudge” because they’ve almost completed their overthrow of America without a shot being fired.
